As part of our collagen myth-busting series, we’re slaying some of the more recent misunderstandings about this miracle molecule. The latest - and possibly most ridiculous of all - is that heating collagen compromises its integrity.
Before we get into the science, anecdotally, we have so much evidence to the contrary!
Does collagen break down in coffee or hot tea?
To begin with, the majority of our team members take their serve of daily collagen in their coffee or tea, so pretty much boiling. If you read customer reviews or their stories in our collagen blog, you will discover the majority also combines collagen with a hot beverage. And we see the results for ourselves! Indeed, although effects differ from person to person, we can each demonstrate one or several improvements to our nails, hair, skin, joints, gut fitness and more.
But then there’s the science.
Does heat destroy collagen? What the science says
Edible Health’s cutting-edge manufacturer’s application laboratory has performed several tests on our collagen peptides and heat stability. They have found that collagen peptides are stable in both hot and cold beverages. What’s more, they have also observed collagen peptides used in products that require sterilisation (121 degrees centigrade - so a lot hotter than a cuppa!) or pasteurisation. In these cases, no changes in quality were noted by customers.
We know there is a lot of misinformation out there regarding collagen. Some of it is deliberate scaremongering, some of it is marketing tactics to part you from your precious pennies. At Edible Health, truth and facts are paramount, and we commit to always telling it to you straight. If you are confused, why not contact us directly with your enquiry? We’d love to hear from you - we could have a chat over some collagen and a hot cuppa ;)
